Some foremen are outstanding leaders who make impossible jobs look easy. Others… have a collection of catchphrases that seem to appear on every shutdown, every turnaround, and every construction project.
This list is all in good fun. If you’ve spent enough time on industrial jobsites, you’ve probably heard every single one of these—and maybe even rolled your eyes once or twice.
Let’s begin.
1. “It’ll only take five minutes.”
Famous last words.
2. “Let’s just knock this out real quick.”
Nothing that starts with this sentence is ever quick.
3. “We’ll be out of here early today.”
Everyone immediately starts laughing.
4. “It’s an easy job.”
If someone has to tell you it’s easy… it probably isn’t.
5. “The print says it’ll fit.”
The field usually has other plans.
6. “Just make it work.”
Engineering would like a word.
7. “We’ve always done it this way.”
Sometimes that’s the problem.
8. “Operations is waiting.”
As if they ever stopped waiting.
9. “Who’s got a grinder?”
Nobody admits they borrowed yours.
10. “Who moved my tape measure?”
It’s somehow always in the last place you look.
11. “This shutdown has been going great.”
Right before something breaks.
12. “Everybody got enough to do?”
The universal signal that more work is coming.
13. “Don’t stand around.”
The crew has been waiting on a permit for 45 minutes.
14. “We’ll figure it out.”
Translation: Nobody knows yet.
15. “I just need one volunteer.”
Funny how one volunteer turns into six people.
16. “Shouldn’t take much welding.”
It usually turns into an all-day repair.
17. “Just one more thing.”
The most dangerous sentence after 5:00 PM.
18. “This is priority number one.”
So are the other six jobs.
19. “Lunch can wait.”
That depends on who you’re asking.
20. “We’ll catch up tomorrow.”
Tomorrow somehow gets busier.
21. “Where’s the apprentice?”
Probably carrying something heavy.
22. “Did you bring your own tools?”
The fastest way to start an argument.
23. “We’ll only need the crane for ten minutes.”
The crane operator laughs quietly.
24. “That bolt should come right out.”
It absolutely will not.
25. “The material should already be here.”
Should.
26. “Go ask Safety.”
Nobody wants to.
27. “I need this yesterday.”
The calendar doesn’t work that way.
28. “We’re almost done.”
According to whose clock?
29. “Take your time—but hurry up.”
The classic contradiction.
30. “It’s just temporary.”
It’ll still be there five years later.
31. “Don’t worry about it.”
Now everyone is worried about it.
32. “We’ll fix it later.”
Later has a habit of never arriving.
33. “Who left this mess?”
Silence.
34. “Everybody’s waiting on us.”
No pressure.
35. “We’re burning daylight.”
Even during night shift.
36. “This is the last shutdown I’m doing.”
You’ve heard them say that every year.
37. “We’ll have plenty of room.”
Until the scaffold goes up.
38. “It’s just one bolt.”
The bolt has fused itself to history.
39. “Let’s think outside the box.”
Translation: We forgot to order the right part.
40. “I appreciate you guys.”
The one phrase nobody gets tired of hearing.
Because the best foremen know something important: crews work harder for leaders who show respect, communicate honestly, and never ask someone to do a job they wouldn’t do themselves.
A Good Foreman Makes All the Difference
Every experienced tradesperson can tell stories about the foreman who made every day miserable—and the one they’d follow to any jobsite in the country.
The best leaders don’t just keep projects on schedule. They earn trust, solve problems, protect their crews, and make long days a little easier.
So if you’re a foreman reading this, don’t worry—we’re just having a little fun.
And if you’ve ever said, “It’ll only take five minutes,” your crew is probably laughing right now.
