Texas is not simply a state with a large refining industry. It is the center of American refining.
As of January 1, 2026, Texas had 34 operating petroleum refineries with approximately 6.13 million barrels per calendar day of atmospheric crude-oil distillation capacity. With total U.S. refining capacity at roughly 18 million barrels per day, Texas alone represents approximately one-third of America’s refining capacity.
For industrial workers, those numbers explain something they have seen for decades. Houston, Baytown, Texas City, Beaumont, Port Arthur and Corpus Christi repeatedly appear on the map whenever refinery construction, maintenance and turnaround work starts moving.
34 Operating Refineries — But Capacity Tells the Bigger Story

Counting refineries does not fully explain Texas’ importance. The size of those facilities matters just as much.
Texas entered 2026 with approximately 6.13 million barrels per calendar day of operating atmospheric distillation capacity and roughly 6.47 million barrels per stream day of capacity.
That capacity is concentrated in some enormous facilities. Four of the five largest U.S. refineries by atmospheric crude-distillation capacity at the beginning of 2026 were located in Texas: Motiva Port Arthur, Marathon Galveston Bay, ExxonMobil Beaumont and ExxonMobil Baytown.
This is why simply counting refinery locations can be misleading. One giant Gulf Coast refinery can contain an extraordinary amount of piping, rotating equipment, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, furnaces, instrumentation, electrical infrastructure and structural steel.
The Texas Gulf Coast Is the Heart of It
The concentration becomes even more impressive when Texas is divided between inland and Gulf Coast refining.
In June 2026, Texas Gulf Coast refineries had approximately 5.4 million barrels per day of operating atmospheric crude-distillation capacity. U.S. refineries collectively had approximately 18 million barrels per day of operating capacity during the same period.
That means approximately 30% of U.S. operating refinery capacity was concentrated on the Texas Gulf Coast alone.
Think about that geographically. Roughly three out of every ten barrels of American refinery operating capacity were concentrated along one industrial coastline.
That concentration helps explain why the Houston Ship Channel, Baytown, Texas City, Beaumont, Port Arthur and Corpus Christi have developed enormous ecosystems of industrial contractors, fabrication shops, equipment suppliers, inspection companies and skilled trades.
These Refineries Are Running Hard

Capacity tells us how large the system is. Utilization tells us how hard that system is working.
Texas Gulf Coast refineries processed approximately 5.15 million barrels per day of gross crude input in June 2026, while refinery utilization reached approximately 95.3%.
Earlier in the year, utilization remained high, moving from approximately 91% in January to nearly 95% by May before exceeding 95% in June.
A refinery operating at these levels is an enormous continuously running mechanical system. Pumps turn. Compressors run. Furnaces fire. Valves cycle. Process piping remains exposed to pressure, temperature and corrosive service. Heat exchangers continuously transfer energy while instruments monitor thousands of operating conditions.
Eventually, equipment must be inspected, repaired, cleaned or replaced.
That is where maintenance and turnarounds become critical.
Why Turnarounds Matter in a Region This Large
A refinery cannot operate indefinitely without major maintenance. Individual process units eventually have to be taken out of service so equipment can be opened, inspected, cleaned, repaired, modified and returned to operation.
During a large turnaround, a facility can bring in substantial temporary workforces in addition to its permanent maintenance organization. Pipefitters replace piping, valves and fittings. Welders complete repairs and modifications. Boilermakers work on vessels, exchangers and towers. Millwrights overhaul rotating equipment. Electricians and instrumentation technicians work on power, controls and instrumentation.
Scaffold builders, riggers, crane operators, insulators, laborers, inspectors, safety personnel and supervisors support the operation.
Now multiply those requirements across 34 operating Texas refineries.
That helps explain why the Texas Gulf Coast has remained one of America’s most important regions for industrial craftsmen. The work is not created only when new facilities are built. Maintaining the enormous amount of infrastructure already operating there creates recurring demand.
Texas Refining Has Grown While the Industry Consolidated
Texas refining also provides an interesting historical comparison.
In the early 1980s, Texas had approximately 4.3 million barrels per day of operating atmospheric crude-distillation capacity. By the beginning of 2026, that figure had climbed above 6.1 million barrels per day.
That represents an increase of roughly 42%.
At the same time, the industry has increasingly concentrated production into large, highly integrated facilities capable of processing enormous crude volumes while connecting directly with petrochemical plants, pipelines, storage terminals and export infrastructure.
For workers, that means the industrial footprint surrounding a refinery extends far beyond the refinery fence.
Four of America’s Five Largest Refineries Are in Texas
Perhaps no statistic demonstrates Texas’ position more clearly.
At the beginning of 2026, four of the five largest U.S. refineries by atmospheric crude-distillation capacity were located in Texas.
Motiva’s Port Arthur refinery had approximately 656,000 barrels per day of capacity. Marathon’s Galveston Bay refinery was approximately 631,000 barrels per day. ExxonMobil Beaumont was approximately 612,000 barrels per day, while ExxonMobil Baytown was approximately 565,000 barrels per day.
Combined, those four facilities alone represent roughly 2.46 million barrels per day of refining capacity.
That is more refining capacity in four Texas facilities than exists in many entire countries.
Why So Much Refining Ended Up on the Gulf Coast
The Texas Gulf Coast combines several advantages in one location.
Crude oil can reach the region through extensive pipeline systems and marine terminals. Finished products can leave through pipelines, ships, barges, trucks and rail. Nearby petrochemical plants can consume refinery-produced feedstocks, while enormous storage-terminal networks allow crude, intermediates and finished products to be stored and transferred.
The coast also provides direct access to international markets.
Over decades, these advantages created a reinforcing industrial network. Refineries encouraged pipelines and terminals. Pipelines encouraged additional processing capacity. Petrochemical plants developed around available feedstocks. Contractors, fabrication facilities and equipment suppliers established operations close to their customers.
The result is not simply a collection of refineries.
It is an interconnected industrial system.
What These Numbers Mean for Industrial Workers
For a traveling craftsman, refinery statistics can tell you more than where petroleum products are manufactured. They show where enormous concentrations of industrial equipment must continually be maintained.
Millions of barrels per day of processing capacity require thousands of miles of process piping, countless flanged connections, valves, pumps, compressors, exchangers, pressure vessels, towers, furnaces and supporting utility systems.
Every one of those components eventually requires inspection, maintenance, repair, modification or replacement.
That is why names such as Houston, Baytown, Texas City, Beaumont, Port Arthur and Corpus Christi continually appear in conversations about refinery work.
The plants are concentrated there. The equipment is concentrated there. The contractors are concentrated there. And when major turnaround seasons arrive, a significant amount of skilled industrial labor can be concentrated there as well.
Field Rule: Follow the Capacity
When evaluating an industrial region, do not look only at how many refineries appear on a map.
Follow the capacity.
A region containing several enormous refineries can represent substantially more equipment and maintenance activity than an area containing numerous smaller plants.
Processing capacity is not a guarantee of available work, but it provides a useful way to understand where America’s largest concentrations of refinery infrastructure are located.
The Number to Remember: 30%
Of all the statistics surrounding Texas refining, one stands above the others:
Approximately 30% of U.S. operating refinery capacity was concentrated on the Texas Gulf Coast in June 2026.
Roughly three out of every ten barrels of American refinery operating capacity were located in one region.
For pipefitters, welders, boilermakers, millwrights, electricians, instrumentation technicians, scaffold builders, riggers, crane operators and other industrial craftsmen, that statistic helps explain why the Texas Gulf Coast has remained one of the most important industrial work corridors in America.

Those are not just petroleum statistics.
They represent an enormous amount of steel, piping, equipment—and the skilled people required to keep it operating.
