Terafab: SpaceX and Tesla Plan $16.8 Billion First Phase in Texas

SpaceX and Tesla’s Terafab project is bringing a major semiconductor manufacturing proposal to Grimes County, Texas. Announced in August and highlighted again in the state’s October business bulletin, the initial phase represents approximately $16.8 billion in planned investment and a projected 3,000 jobs. Follow Næxon Industrial News for updates on America’s industrial development.

The companies intend to combine chip manufacturing, memory production, advanced packaging, and testing at one location. Bringing these operations together could help them coordinate production and develop new computing hardware more quickly.

The planned facility would supply chips for artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and proposed space-based computing systems. These are the companies’ intended applications, while the announced manufacturing scale remains a development target rather than operating capacity. Tesla separately disclosed $30 billion in credit facilities in September as it expands its investment in artificial intelligence and manufacturing. That financing is not a dedicated Terafab construction budget, and Tesla reported no outstanding borrowings under the new facilities as of September 29.

For America’s skilled trades, Terafab is a project worth watching as contractor awards and construction schedules become clearer. A semiconductor facility of this scale could require electrical installation, process piping, mechanical systems, equipment setting, and specialized commissioning. These are potential areas of work, rather than confirmed contractor scopes or hiring announcements. Build relevant field knowledge through Næxon’s free trade courses.

The projected 3,000 jobs should not be interpreted as available construction positions. Employers, craft requirements, pay, per diem, and mobilization dates need separate verification before workers make travel plans.
